Saint Andrews will have more affordable housing options in place by the end of next year.
A 42-unit building is set to be constructed at the corner of Mowat Drive and Bar Road.
The two-floor building will include 36 two-bedroom units and six one-bedroom units.
Developer Tressa Bevington of Compass Housing said this is an important project for her.
“There’s such a lack of housing in the area, which is really impacting businesses, the community college, and also families and seniors that are looking for an affordable place to live,” Bevington said in a recent interview.
Rents for the units will range from $800 to $1,200 per month, according to the town.
It said those rental rates will be “secure” with only inflation adjustments for 15 years.
Town council voted to contribute $500,000 to help make the project a reality.
The town expects to get its money back through property taxes in about 10 years.
Bevington said they still need to complete the building design, line up tradespeople and order supplies.
“We hope to break ground late summer, that’s what we’re aiming for. We’re expecting it to take about a year for it to be open,” she said.
The developer said they expect “some hiccups” along the way due to inflation and supply chain issues.
“But we’re going to push forward and we’re going to really try to get through it the best we can. We can face this,” said Bevington.
The new building will be adjacent to the Anchors Landing project which Bevington and her team completed a few years ago. The 36-unit building caters to seniors in the community.
