A warning from police in Saint John about fraudsters targeting the area using the “grandparent scam”.
Police are hearing an increasing number of complaints about this scam.
A fraudster calls seniors posing as police officers, lawyers and clergy saying their grandchildren were either in an accident or in jail and cash is needed to help them.
Saint John police want everyone to inform the seniors in their lives about this scam.
Seniors who get a call like this should hang up and contact the family member said to be in danger right away.
When the caller claims to be a police officer, hang up and contact the police to confirm the legitimacy of the call.
Additional information on how to protect yourself, friends and family can be found through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
