The executive director of Canadian Parents for French New Brunswick calls the Higgs government’s approach “bizarre” in eliminating French immersion.
Chris Collins says the province has indicated it is going ahead with changes to the program as noted in this week’s Throne Speech while still doing public consultations at the same time.
“It will be a reduced system that is going to water down the French immersion that’s available in the province and it may or may not be successful in teaching Anglophone kids how to speak French in New Brunswick.”
Collins notes how the provincial government’s own data shows the program is 94 to 98 percent successful.
“It’s a shame because we know that French immersion is the gold standard for teaching Anglophones how to speak French across Canada.”
Canadian Parents for French New Brunswick has launched a new website and a campaign encouraging people to join them in calling on the province to Save French Immersion in New Brunswick.
