The Town of St. Stephen has opened registration for its first Special Olympics swim team.
So far, the team has added a coach who is already a trained SwimNB coach.
“They just had to go through their Special Olympics coach program, which was a free online class with one of the trainers. Aside from that, Special Olympics has been easy to work with,” said Aaron Muzzatti, aquatics and programming coordinator for the Town of St. Stephen.
Muzzatti mentioned it costs a swimmer $50 to register, which is good for the entire season.
“However, night one is free, so we’re actually kind of discouraging people from registering online immediately because they would have to pay upfront, so just come in and try it out with us before you sign up,” said Muzzatti.
Muzzatti also brought up that the town will leave registration open for the entire season.
“Just so anyone who missed the first day can still come in and still have the opportunity to join the team,” said Muzzatti.
The first team practice is scheduled for November 1.
“We aren’t looking at competitions right away because it’s going to take a while for the swimmers to get up to the point where they are wanting to these competitions,” said Muzzatti.
However, Special Olympics will send the town a competition schedule in the near future.
Muzzatti added that the community response has been fantastic so far.
