A Saint John police officer accused of using excessive force during an arrest has had his court case adjourned again.
Const. Benaiah Sok, a three-year member of the force, was charged with assault causing bodily harm just before Christmas after an investigation conducted by the Fredericton Police Force.
Saint John’s police chief requested the investigation after receiving a report of a member using excessive force while trying to make an arrest uptown in August.
Sok was scheduled for election on the charge in Saint John provincial court on Monday morning.
Instead, his defense counsel requested a two-week adjournment to have more time to review disclosure related to the case.
Judge Andrew Palmer approved the request and set the matter over until March 21.
Sok, who joined the force in early 2019, was previously reassigned to administrative duties with no public contact pending the criminal proceedings.
The police force said a Police Act investigation will take place once those proceedings have concluded.
