Avian Influenza (also known as “bird flu”) has been found in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
It is a highly contagious viral disease that affects a variety of bird species, including waterfowl, birds of prey, songbirds, and poultry.
There are several different avian influenza strains that range from those causing mild or no clinical signs to those causing severe illness and high mortality rates.
Although bird flu has been found in neighbouring provinces it has not been detected in New Brunswick.
However, the Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development urges the public to remain vigilant and to report sick, dead, or dying birds to its toll-free number, 1-833-301-0334.
