It has been a three-year journey for a group of women exploring the possibility of having a dog park in St. Stephen.
A lot of the journey for the women has been spent researching and educating themselves on dog parks.
“We talked to so many municipalities in the province that have dog parks to see how they got them established, what were the negative aspects, what were the positive aspects, and how things worked,” said committee member Sheila Brooks.
The town has approved and established an ad hoc committee to work on the project, as well as approved a parcel of land at the entrance of the Elm Street Nature Park for its location.
Brooks mentioned that their group the St. Stephen Dog Club has accepted the task to raise approximately $50,000.
As well, the committee has applied for two grants and will apply for three more at a later date.
“We have a gofundme donation on our Facebook page going where we have almost $7,000 on that … and starting March 1to 12 we are also holding an online auction,” mentioned Brooks.
The online auction will have donated items from local businesses, and artists, such as jewelry to an air compressor.
As well, other fundraising ideas are also being developed.
Brooks added the committee is optimistic and hopes if the fundraising effort goes well the dog park will be open by May 2022.
