The issue of consumer fireworks is expected to be back before Quispamsis town council on Tuesday night.
Staff were asked to look at best practices for regulating fireworks after recent complaints to council.
“It appears there are no “best practices” when it comes to local by-laws governing the sale and use of fireworks across Canada. It is truly a localized issue,” said a staff report to council.
That report, included in Tuesday night’s council package, suggests three options for council to consider.
Among them is limiting consumer fireworks to Friday and Saturday evenings from May through September, along with New Year’s Eve, Canada Day, and New Brunswick Day, and implementing higher fines for violations.
Council could also look at an outright ban on the sale and use of consumer fireworks, which has been done in other municipalities.
“Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, Dieppe and Riverview – the only New Brunswick municipalities larger than Quispamsis — have banned the detonation of consumer fireworks. Saint John has also banned their sale,” staff noted in their report.
The third option is to maintain the status quo. Currently, consumer fireworks are allowed to be detonated nightly between dusk and 11 p.m.
The virtual council meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be livestreamed on the town’s YouTube channel.
