The ever-changing COVID-19 landscape and the arrival of the Omicron variant could put a damper on winter travel plans to sunshine destinations.
In a year-end meeting, Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport CEO Bernard LeBlanc said Sunwing and Air Transat are still planning to resume direct service to Mexico and the Caribbean.
“Sunwing and Air Transat are still taking bookings for the flights. The flights are set to start on February 10. There should be five Air Transat flights per week and six Sunwing.”
LeBlanc noted the challenge right now is that the federal government has not yet said if Moncton can even have international flights this winter.
“That may change at some point in time. If they don’t see certainty in being able to undertake international flights, there’s new passenger rights rules so they could be subject to a penalty if they change too late.”
Direct flights from Moncton to sunshine destinations were cancelled last winter due to the pandemic.
