Dalhousie University in Halifax wants students to avoid classes if they attended homecoming parties near campus on the weekend.
Provost and Vice-President Academic Frank Harvey has sent out a memo asking students not to attend any activities on campus for seven days and to avoid public spaces in general.
Harvey says the parties jeopardize the university’s ability to provide safe in-person learning this fall.
“We take this measure knowing it will likely be imperfect, but our top priority must remain the health, safety and well-being of our Dalhousie community,” says Harvey. “We have seen a significant increase in COVID cases among 20-to-39-year-olds in the Halifax area. This weekend’s illegal gathering poses a potential risk to our ability to continue with a safe, sustainable in-person learning experience this fall.”
Dal also wants those students to get tested.
Even with a negative result, they will still be asked to stay away from campus for the full week.
Harvey urges anyone who stopped by the parties to show respect to the community by following the directive.
