Family members of a missing 76-year-old man from Musquash are organizing another search for him this weekend.
Paul Doughty was last seen at a business near Mckay Loop Road and Route 175 in the Pennfield area on August 18.
The vehicle he was believed to have been driving was found abandoned on a nearby trail off Mckay Loop Road last week.
Chelsea Doughty-Lindsay said it has been overwhelming how many people want to help find her grandfather.
“At this point, the public has done more to help us than the authorities have,” Doughty-Lindsay said in a phone interview Thursday.
“We’ve had strangers reach out to us to send out drones and we’ve had people from the public out searching different areas where he could possibly be.”
Days after her grandfather’s vehicle was found last week, Doughty-Lindsay and her family organized a community search of the nearby area.
Doughty-Lindsay said more than 50 people from “all over” came out on Saturday to help find any clues to where her grandfather might be.
According to the family, ground search and rescue made the decision to only search a one-kilometre radius from where the vehicle was found.
“That’s why we did end up organizing our own searches so we could branch out and check further areas,” said Doughty-Lindsay.
RCMP Cpl. Jullie Rogers-Marsh said Thursday that officers continue to actively look for Doughty and are following up on every tip that comes in.
Rogers-Marsh said ground search and rescue teams were in the area last week after his car was found and a helicopter was searching the area Thursday. She said officers have been providing updates to the family on a daily basis.
Meanwhile, Doughty’s family is planning a second search for this coming Saturday to cover more ground in the area where his vehicle was located.
“Seeing the support and seeing how many people who care about finding him is honestly what has gotten us through all of this at this point,” she said.
Participants are asked to meet at Mckay Bye Road in Pennfield at 8 a.m. and to wear rubber boots as the search area is boggy. Organizers also recommend wearing something orange as there are hunters in the area.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Grand Bay-Westfield RCMP at 506-757-1020.
