Climate change is real and it’s affecting Canada.
Last week a new website was unveiled called Climate Proof Canada.
Robin Edgars from the Insurance Bureau of Canada says it’s fitting the website went live amid a heatwave.
“The fact we launched the coalition during that week were we saw the hottest temperature we ever saw in Canada in Lytton, British Columbia, which was then broken subsequently two more times in the following two days, and then the town burned to the ground because of a wildfire…these things are all connected,” explains Edgars.
Edgar says one of their main asks is the creation of a national climate adaptation strategy.
“That has targets that their (Federal government) actions can be measured against, so they can put in place the kinds of measures that are required to deal with this more severe weather.”
He adds they also want to see the government appoint an advisor for national disaster resilience.
Edgars says the group is not just made up of insurance companies, but physician groups, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, indigenous organizations, the Forest Products Association of Canada, and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
