New Brunswickers can now see how many calls RCMP officers are responding to in their local area.
Mounties recently unveiled a new online occurrence map that breaks down calls by RCMP jurisdictions in the province.
Cpl. Hans Ouellette, a spokesperson for the New Brunswick RCMP, said it is the first time this level of detail has been provided for an entire division.
“It gives a list of occurrences to date compared to the same period last year and also a break down of some of the types of crimes and how many of those we’ve had to date,” Ouellette said in an interview.
Occurrence types currently listed on the map include assault, break and enter, drug offence, fraud, robbery and extortion, motor vehicle theft, theft over $5,000, and calls under the Mental Health Act.
Mounties came up with the list of occurrence types after consulting with communities and partners throughout the province, Ouellette said.
Ouellette said the map is just one part of the RCMP’s commitment to accountability and transparency to its communities.
“New Brunswickers want to know what police are doing in their communities so these tools actually help us tell our story directly to the people that we serve,” he said.
Last August, New Brunswick RCMP started publishing a daily occurrence report, which provides a brief description of some of the calls for service officers respond to on a daily basis.
Ouellette said they are always looking for more ways to proactively release more information about the work their officers are doing in the community.
He said it is their goal to update the map on a weekly basis, depending on operational demands.
