Canada has reported its first case of someone experiencing a blood clot after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
The Public Health Agency of Canada announced the reported case on Tuesday.
Several media outlets report that the case involves a woman in Quebec, though her age was not released.
Last month, Canada’s vaccine advisory committee recommended pausing AstraZeneza vaccines to people under 55 after reports of similar clots in Europe.
Health Canada says the side effect is “very rare” and the benefits of the vaccine to protect against COVID-19 outweigh the potential risks.
1/5 PHAC has received a report of an individual in Canada who has experienced a rare blood clot with low platelets following immunization with COVISHIELD, the SII version of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. This is the first reported case in Canada.
