The World Meteorological Organization’s Hurricane Committee has retired Dorian from the rotating list of Atlantic tropical cyclone names.
Committee members made the decision based on the death and destruction it caused.
The Category 5 storm plowed into the northwestern Bahamas in Sept. 2019, leaving behind catastrophic damage in its wake.
Several days later, Dorian made landfall along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia as a post-tropical storm.
The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Maritimes and left half-a-million homes and businesses without power.
Dexter will replace Dorian on the list of names in 2025.
Three names from the 2020 season were also retired: Laura, Eta and Iota.
Meanwhile, the committee also decided to stop using the Greek alphabet when the standard list of names is exhausted in a given season.
The said the Greek alphabet “creates a distraction from the communication of hazard and storm warnings and is potentially confusing.”
