The latest federal election rumours point to June for when the minority Trudeau government could call a vote.
However, Canadian Taxpayer Federation Director Aaron Wudrick tells us there is plenty for the Liberals to consider.
He says they are gauging their handling of the pandemic, but, polls also have the government and opposition Tories almost tied in support.
“People forget often the Conservatives got more votes than the Liberals in the last election, they just got them in the wrong places and got fewer seats. It’s more about governments defeat themselves. If people are done with Trudeau, and are looking for an alternative, and think Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is a reasonable guy, they’ll go for him,” says Wudrick.
He indicates handling of the pandemic needs to improve.
“For example, if the vaccine rollout continues to go poorly, we won’t see an election. But if things turn a corner, and people start to get the needle in the arm, I think the odds of an election increase dramatically,” says the Federation Director.
The government was also watching to see how the Newfoundland provincial election turned out.
Wudrick adds any government will lean towards calling a vote if it smells a majority win.
