Quick work by police officers and firefighters helped save a vacant building in uptown Saint John.
Police say officers smelled what they thought was smoke while patrolling in the City Road area early Thursday morning.
A quick canvass of the area led them to Sewell Street, where flames were found at a building.
Firefighters were called in and got the fire under control before it caused extensive damage.
“Fire officials indicate that if the fire had burned much longer, there could have been extensive damage to the vacant and other buildings on Sewell Street,” police said in a news release.
No word yet on what caused the fire.
