According to a recent poll, Canadians are spending more time outside due to COVID-19.
Andrew Holland, with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, says that’s a good thing for the planet.
“The more we spend time in nature and connect with it, we’ll hopefully care about it,” says Holland, “and work with groups like ours to conserve it.”
He tells us that while the pandemic has changed how we live, it’s also given us the chance to rediscover the natural beauty where we live.
“Sometimes we overlook the obvious in the natural beauty in our communities…whether that’s trails or waterfalls or greenspaces or rivers.”
The poll, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Nature Conservancy, found that most Canadians say spending time in nature is good for them.
“94 per cent of people acknowledge that nature is helping them relieve stress and anxiety during this period, and 86 per cent agree spending time in nature is important for our mental health.”
He adds that 74 per cent say that spending time in nature is more important now than ever before.
