The Huntsman Marine Science Centre has received some federal support to help upgrade its educational facilities.
Officials announced this week that the centre in Saint Andrews received more than $53,000 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
“This funding will enhance our capacity to again offer these important community-based school programs and welcome tourists in a safe manner during this COVID-19 era,” Chris Badger, the centre’s executive director, said in a news release.
As part of the upgrades, physical barriers were installed to provide individual work stations within three teaching labs and the classroom.
Transparent barriers were also installed for use during multi-day education programs, allowing for safe teaching, social interaction and dining amongst peers.
In addition, lights, sink taps, soap dispensers and hand dryers were automated to reduce the risk for transmission within common washrooms.
“These changes will enable the centre to deliver safe education and tourism activities, as well as expand its year-round program offering,” Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long said in the release.
Huntsman Marine has provided educational experiences for more than 75,000 students from elementary and high schools. It engages with high schools and universities across the Maritimes and eastern Ontario, and typically welcomes more than 35,000 tourists during the summer season.
