Several Christmas tree drop-off sites are being set up throughout Greater Saint John.
City spokesperson Nathalie Logan said six sites will be open throughout the city between Jan. 1 and 12.
They include the Charles Gorman Arena on University Avenue; the Peter Murray Arena on Dever Road; the Hilton Belyea area on Lowell Street; the Forest Hills Ball Field on Westmorland Road; between 30 and 38 Taylor Avenue in Crescent Valley; and at the Old Sugar Refinery site, located at the end of Charlotte Street and Vulcan Street.
“Take off all your decorations and lights and trimmings,” said Logan. “Once that’s all set, you can drive it down to your closest location and look for the designated drop-off area, it will be clearly marked in each location.”
All six sites will be plowed and maintained for the safety of the public and workers, the city says.
Logan said if you are not able to drop off your tree at a designated site, you can place it in your compost cart instead.
“Trim your tree like if you were gonna drop it off — so take all your decorations off and everything — and then delimb the tree and cut the trunk and branches into manageable chunks and blocks, so no larger than four feet,” she said.
Rothesay will have a one-day Christmas tree drop-off on Saturday, Jan. 9, for residents of the town.
Trees can be dropped off at the Bill McGuire Centre parking lot, East Riverside-Kingshurst Park, the Rothesay Arena front parking lot, or the entrance to the Wells Recreation Field. Trees will not be collected as part of regular garbage or compost pickup.
In Quispamsis, trees can be dropped off at the Walter Jewett Ball Field parking lot on Municipal Drive on or before Monday, Jan. 11.
Hampton residents should place their tree at the curb by 7 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8.
