One new case of COVID-19 has been identified at Shannex Parkland Saint John involving an employee, the company announced Sunday.
The case does not appear to have been included in the two cases announced by Public Health on Sunday, which involved two people in their 60s in the Fredericton health zone.
The individual was working in what is known as the cohorting area, where residents who test positive for the virus are cared for by team members dedicated to that area.
Shannex said the cohorting area is equipped with everything needed to isolate residents and has a separate entrance and exit to control the flow of people and supplies into and out of the area.
“While this is unsettling news, it proves once again the importance of retesting as the incubation period for this virus is particularly long,” the company said in a statement.
Residents and employees of Tucker Hall, where the outbreak began, will be retested on Tuesday, according to Shannex.
Shannex also reported Sunday that one of the residents being cared for in the cohorting area passed away from “complications unrelated to COVID-19.”
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of this Tucker Hall community member,” said the company’s statement.
There have been 19 confirmed cases at Parkland Saint John to date: 11 residents, seven employees, and one non-Shannex employee. Five Shannex employees have recovered and been cleared to return to work.
Shannex said it is working with Public Health and has a plan to safely discharge residents from the cohorting area when they have fully recovered.
