A Saint John construction worker will have a tale to tell after becoming stuck in a small space in the basement of an Uptown construction site for at least 20 hours.
Saint John firefighters were called to the scene just before 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. When arriving for work at 61 King Street, another construction worker heard noises coming from the basement and found his colleague stuck.
The man in his 20s became wedged in the small space sometime on Tuesday but, no one else was aware.
Platoon Chief Barry Oickle described it as a difficult rescue as none of the firefighters could get into the space and bring the man out.
He said the space as about two feet long and 18 inches wide adding “we don’t know how he got in there.”
With permission from the property owner, firefighters removed carpet and flooring and eventually freed him.
The property owner told Oickle, “do whatever you have to do”.
The construction worker was removed around 2 p.m. on Wednesday and transported to hospital to be checked out.
Oickle said he drank two bottles of water and said he was very tired.
He came out on a stretcher and was covered in dust after spending almost a day in the basement.
