Roger Melanson has been appointed the interim leader of the New Brunswick Liberals.
Party officials made the announcement during a news conference in Fredericton on Monday.
“I am thankful for the confidence that the Liberal Caucus has placed in me and I am eager to assume my new role as Interim Leader of the Official Opposition,” said Melanson in a news release.
It comes two weeks to the day after the Progressive Conservatives won a majority government in the Sept. 14 election.
Former leader Kevin Vickers stepped down that same night, saying he takes full responsibility for the results.
The Liberals won just 17 of the province’s 49 seats in the legislature, four fewer than in the 2018 election.
“Premier Higgs wanted a majority government to carry through with his hidden agenda. New Brunswickers can be confident that he will not do so without being held to account,” said Melanson.
The Dieppe MLA was first elected to the legislature in 2010. He was re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2020.
Melanson has held several cabinet positions in the past, including as minister of finance; transportation and infrastructure; post-secondary education, training and labour; and energy and resource development.
