The Progressive Conservatives say they will extend the tourism rebate through March of next year if re-elected.
The “staycation” incentive reimburses New Brunswickers up to 20 per cent on expenses incurred while travelling overnight in the province.
Party leader Blaine Higgs made the announcement in Saint Andrews on Saturday. He said the seaside community is the perfect example of how tourism during a pandemic can be done correctly.
“They have disinfection teams which keep public spaces clean,” Higgs said. “They’ve added public tables and outdoor seating. People feel good, they feel safe, and they are coming.”
Higgs said the PC plan would help level the playing field for all tourism operations.
“This extension will allow winter operators to benefit the way our summer operators have. It will also help them plan more reliably for the 2021 season.”
The proposed extension would last until the end of March 2021.
