Abortion services are provided at three public hospitals in New Brunswick and the premier believes the province is following the Canada Health Act.
Blaine Higgs says the government will not be funding abortions which occur outside of a hospital setting.
“Because this is a slippery slope…. and where do you go from there? How many other private clinics are we going to fund in a public health care system? I mean is that where our health system is going?” he said.
Higgs adds if anyone feels the province is not following the Canada Health Act, they have every right to pursue legal action.
Clinic 554 in Fredericton has been struggling to stay open and is seeking government funding to continue operating.
The clinic has become known for its wide-range of rarely-covered services such as trans-health care and abortion access.
