Wolastoqey chiefs are asking for unbiased investigations into the deaths of two Indigenous people in New Brunswick.
BEI, a Quebec police watchdog organization, has been tapped to handle the investigation of the police shooting deaths of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi.
A release from Wolastoqey nation chiefs points out that BEI’s website calls the organization “a specialized police force,” made up of several ex-police officers.
The chiefs say they would like a non-police affiliated organization to handle the inquiry.
“Our people have participated in national inquiries and we have heard words spoken by governments, and still we come back to the same tragic outcomes of the past weeks,” the release states. “This must change.”
