The memory of Chantel Moore, an Indigenous woman who was shot and killed by police in Edmundston, will be honoured during a healing walk in Moncton.
Moore was killed by police just one day after the one-year anniversary of the National Inquiry of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Co-organizer of the event, Patty Musgrave Quinn, says all are invited to attend to help raise awareness on the injustices toward Indigenous people.
“We’re encouraging anyone who is a drummer, singer or jingle dancer to please come and offer their prayers for the family of Chantel Moore and the spirit of Chantel as she makes her journey,” says Quinn.
Quinn says many often only pay lip service when it comes to Indigenous issues and hopes everyone comes out to stand behind that support.
“The federal Indigenous affairs minister’s comments about being angry and the support from our prime minister, from our provincial minister Jake Stuart, have given us a little bit of hope so now we need to see everyone put their money where their mouth is,” she says.
The walk will start at 1 p.m. Saturday from the skate park on Assomption Boulevard to Downing Street and then up Main Street to Bore Park.
Corresponding walks will also be held in Fredericton, Madawaska and Cape Breton.
