Canadians are being asked to wear something red today as a tribute to the tragic loss of RCMP Constable Heidi Stevenson and the other victims in the Nova Scotia shootings.
The National Police Federation, working with the RCMP, say the campaign is one of the events marking Friday as a Day of Mourning.
Canadians are urged to share pictures, videos, and messages of support online using the hashtag #WearRedFriday.
The federation says wearing red to support heroes is a “proud tradition” inspired by an initiative to support Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
The Wear Red Campaign has also been led by RCMP spouses over the years to honour fallen officers.
At 2 p.m. Atlantic Time Friday, Canadians are asked to stop what they’re doing and observe a moment of silence while wearing red.
“This was an unimaginably tragic event that underscores the very real risk that our RCMP Members face when they go to work everyday to protect our communities,” said Brian Sauvé, President of the National Police Federation.
“Our hope is that this small gesture will help unite Canadians in a show of support for the RCMP and the families of all the victims of this tragic event.”
