Roger Chamberlain believes having the Sussex emergency department open at night saved his life.
That is why the Passekeag man is worried about plans to close the ER between midnight and 8 a.m.
Chamberlain said he was feeling unwell one night before Christmas, so he and his wife made the 15-minute trip from their home to the Sussex Health Centre.
“They checked me out and said ‘you’re having a heart attack,'” said Chamberlain. “They said ‘we’re going to have to transfer you to Saint John, but we’re going to have to give you a beta-blocker.'”
After being given a beta-blocker, he was transferred to the Saint John Regional Hospital, where he had a stent put in.

Chamberlain believes the outcome would have been a lot different had the ER in Sussex not been open.
“I’ve had heart attacks before, this is my fourth one, but before I used to tell it was a heart attack. This one here, it didn’t feel nothing like a heart attack,” he said.
Chamberlain hopes health officials will reverse their plans to close emergency rooms in Sussex and five other communities at night.
