An uptown Saint John business is expanding after only a few months in operation.
Carey Morris first opened My City Life on Princess Street in September 2019.
The store sells “a little bit of everything,” said Morris, including furniture, home decor and antiques.
“[My fiancée and I] were out shopping for ourselves and everything was hard to find, we couldn’t find what we wanted … so we figured why not start something on our own,” said Morris.
Around the same time, commercial space became vacant in the couple’s building, which is managed by Morris’ fiancée, Mike Melvin.
The couple took over the 300-sq.-ft. storefront and opened their doors to the public.
Melvin said they thought most of their sales would be furniture and home decor, but customers were focused more on the antiques and other items they found at auctions and estate sales.
“It quickly evolved into this fun thing where we were going out and basically looking for items for people, going to the auctions specifically trying to find things,” he said. “We developed a list of about 50 names and once a week, we would find something great for someone, they would come back in, buy it, and off they would go.”
Here we grow again!!! It's hard to believe …but in less than 16 weeks we have outgrown our little shop and have…

Melvin said the shop quickly outgrew its little space and they soon realized they needed a larger location.
The search led them to the Brunswick Square Shopping Centre, where a 2,000-sq.-ft. shop called their name.
“I think the city is ready for something like this,” said Melvin about their business. “I think there’s been a real gap in the marketplace for a long time.
“Honestly, if I can get 5,000-sq.-ft. down the road, we’ll probably move into that too.”
Morris and Melvin have spent the past few weeks moving items from their old location into their new one.
They said the response from the public has been overwhelming.
“We’ve been contacted by dozens more people who are looking for specific items, which we’ll definitely help you find, or wanting to consign some items, or just wondering what we have in the shop and where the new location is going to be and when can they come and see,” said Melvin.
My City Life’s new location is on the second floor of Brunswick Square between Coles and W. Smith & Co. Fine Jewellers. The grand opening will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Feb. 1.
