Volunteers are needed for the Elementary Literacy Friends program which aims to promote literacy among grade two students.
It’s a 10-week commitment where volunteers spend two hours a week reading with students.
ELF Program Manager Catherine Barry says Grade 2 is important for getting a solid foundation in reading and building confidence.
“Research shows that if a child isn’t reading well by the end of grade 2 or 3 they are more likely to struggle with reading throughout their lives,” Barry said. “Those grades around grade 2 are really important for getting a solid foundation in reading, building up their confidence to allow them to be able to read so they can succeed in other subjects as they move throughout school.”
