The new year will soon be here and the mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield hopes it is a lot drier than the last one.
The town was once again hit with devastating flooding from the Saint John River this past spring.
As part of a year-end interview, Grace Losier talked about how they handled the high water.
“It was wonderful for a community whose volunteers came out by droves to fill sandbags and offer assistance and make food and all the things communities do when they find themselves in need. I was proud of their response to the flood. I hope we don’t have another one in 2020,” said Losier.
One thing the town will be concentrating on in the new year is its master plan.
Losier said she is proud of how the process has gone so far.
“We had a lot of people participate in the process, a lot of visitors to the open houses and almost 3,500 people going online to look at the mapping and provide comments,” she said.
“We had a lot of opinions injected into our thought process so we look forward to that outcome.”
Earlier in the year, Losier slammed Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Oliver for the shape of Highway 7 between two of the town’s exit, calling it “dastardly and deplorable.”
But the stretch of highway has since been redone and the mayor is giving credit to the provincial government.
“I’m happy to say that Bill [Oliver] was able to find the funding and the wherewithal to get that fixed up,” said Losier.
