The city will explore a reduction to its winter street maintenance service as part of its restructuring efforts.
Staff say they could realistically get rid of 12 pieces of snow removal equipment that can only plow, in favour of vehicles that can both plow and sand/salt roads.
They would also look at re-balancing shifts to have more people working during the night, to get ahead of overnight storms.
The restructuring could mean savings of almost $350,000.
The extra equipment would be sent to auction, and any money made would go back into the fleet fund.
Staff say there are some downsides: by reducing the size of the fleet, it decreases their peak response capabilities for storms.
It’ll also have an impact on summer service and ability to complete projects during construction season.
Council will explore the service restructuring as part of its sustainability initiatives to reach a balanced budget for 2021.
