The legacy of Erminie Cohen will live on through a series of endeavours by the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation.
Cohen, who passed away in February, was instrumental in the creation of foundation almost 18 years ago.
Executive Director Suzanne Kingston says one of their board members suggested the idea of an award in her honour.
“We thought through an Erminie Cohen award we can remember her and her influence but, then we are going to identify others that are like her.
Every year there will be people who will be recognized for that kind of way of being,” Kingston said.
The award will be called the Erminie Cohen Compassion Award and future recipients will have their name added to the base.
The award is a wood sculpture created by artist Werner Arnold.
In addition to founding the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation, Cohen served as a Canadian Senator for 8 years.
A group of New Brunswick Senators are funding the sculpture that will become the Erminie Cohen Compassion Award.
A fundraising luncheon in honour of Erminie Cohen will be held on March 23rd, 2019 at the Delta Marriott in Saint John, N.B. with the first award recipient honoured in 2021.
Acadia Broadcasting is a sponsor of the event.
