The latest report from the Acting Commissioner of Official Languages in New Brunswick has already been given a thumbs down by the People’s Alliance Party and Premier Blaine Higgs.
Michel Carrier thinks the people of New Brunswick need to know why none of his recommendations are going to be considered.
“I do it in a very balanced fashion and I think that we are owed an explanation as to why they feel this is not necessary. They may have some explanations, I’d like to hear them,” stated Carrier.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the Official Languages Act and as a government worker in the 1970s, Carrier says a lot has been accomplished since then and he doesn’t take the rejection of his recommendations personally.
“Instead of saying, ‘well I’m so depressed things are happening this way,’ no I’m not that kind of person. I have been a witness personally (while a civil servant) of the last 50 years as to how we have been able to do that in New Brunswick and I think we should be all proud of what we’ve done,” said Carrier.
He also says we can get things accomplished in a civilized matter.
“We have changed society without violence, without nastiness that we see elsewhere. In this province we’ve had discussions, we’ve had arguments, etc., but we have moved forward and I think it sends a message that we can continue to do that,” stated Carrier.
