I know.
Summer isn’t technically over because I am reminded of this every time I say “Fall” on the air and I am sorry if my use of this F word offends you.
You see, I LOVE summer! I do. I much prefer flip flops over heels, picnics over pumpkin spice, BBQ’s over slow cookers and sandy beaches over falling leaves.
I love Fall, too. But there is just something about the care-free, whimsical feeling that comes along with Summer. My Summer is typically spent camping, and you know how much I love to do that.
But there is a time and a place for Fall. And it’s after Summer.
I would, however, like to make a teeny tiny suggestion – Can we all just agree that perhaps the end of Summer, or start of Fall, might mean different things to different people?
For example, people with children typically say the kids go back to school “in the Fall”. We don’t say kids go back at “the end of Summer”. I have three kids and just associate back to school with the demise of that care-free feeling.
Do I wish it were different? Of course I do! But ask any parent – when school starts, “Summer” (as we know it) changes almost instantly.
Also, I’m no meteorologist, but I feel like the weather has shifted a bit over time.
June used to be a great summer month. I remember going to the beach on the last day of school when I was a kid. There were days I would get home on the bus and be absolutely baked walking home. But June has lost a bit of its heat, I find. I don’t even consider taking vacation in June, it’s just not nice enough.
When I was a kid, September cooled off considerably. I almost always started back to school in a sweater or sporting a new jacket. Socks, pants, the works. Is it just me or has that changed a bit?
To me, September has kind of become the “New June”. I’m going to call it, “SEPTUMMER”! And trust me – I love it.
The calendar and I may disagree on our definition of the exact end of Summer, but that in no way means I want to “rush into” Fall.
I’m a Summer lover.
Likely I will still refer to the start of school as “Fall”. After all, old habits die hard.
