The Trudeau government announced more funding to help Saint John Energy continue to role out its Smart Grid program.
The utility is getting $1.6 million from Natural Resources Canada to go with the $4.1 million it already received.
Saint John Energy vice-president Ryan Mitchell says it is all about finding ways to save money on peak energy usage.
The additional funding will increase Conservation Voltage Reduction, or CVR, coverage from 70 to 85 per cent.
“It automatically, as the conditions permit, adjusts the dial on the operating voltage levels, so we are talking two or three per cent. It is not noticeable to the customer other than it reduces their electricity consumption in peak energy,” said Mitchell.
He says the program helps cut down on peak energy costs, noting $1.3 million was saved with a reduction of 95 megawatts in 2018.
“Peak energy costs equate almost $30 million a year for Saint John Energy so we do have a lot of focus on reducing those costs to ensure that we are able to continue to offer the lowest electricity rates in Atlantic Canada well into the future,” stated Mitchell.
