Funding for flood mitigation efforts was announced this past week in Fredericton by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
With three major floods over the past 11 years, residents in Fredericton and the surrounding area have faced the impacts of the climate crisis first-hand, including the high cost of recovery.
Investments of $11.4 million will go toward protecting key transportation systems and municipal infrastructure, so essential services can still be provided during floods.
The funds will also be used to create and expand wetlands in the area, improving the city’s resilience to flooding.
A news release says $120 million in funding will be announced for flood mitigation across Canada in the coming weeks.
