A long-term shelter opened Wednesday evening to accommodate residents left homeless after a fire in a Miramichi apartment building.
The fire broke out in one unit of the building over the weekend, but the power had to be shut off to the entire building due to safety reasons.
The Canadian Red Cross says 50 residents were forced out of their homes.
A hotel conference room at the Rodd Inn was used as a temporary shelter for 37 residents over the weekend.
The owner of the apartment building met with a contractor and the Fire Marshal this week, but there are extensive repairs needed.
The long-term shelter will be made available until repairs can be completed.
