The RCMP had a busy holiday weekend, thanks to a couple of checkstops in southeastern New Brunswick.
Over 7,500 vehicles were checked, 70 tickets were issued, and four drivers had their vehicles towed at stops in Salisbury and Saint-Jacques.
The 70 tickets issued were for for speeding, distracted driving and other offences. The four vehicles towed were due to unsafe driving.
“Although police will be conducting these types of enforcement operations throughout the summer, it’s important to remember that everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe,” said RCMP Sgt. Mario Maillet in a release.
“Whenever someone sees a suspected impaired driver; or someone who’s leaving a gathering who’s been drinking or doing drugs; or someone who’s driving dangerously – call 911. It is considered an emergency if someone’s life could be in danger.”
During the checkstops, police also seized approximately 81,000 contraband cigarettes.
A 49-year-old man from Brent’s Cove, Newfoundland, was arrested and later released on a promise to appear in Edmundston Provincial Court. He could face charges under the Excise Act.
