A group of cyclists traveled 4150 miles in order to raise money for breast cancer research.
3 Country Ride Inc. started their journey almost three months ago in Tijuana, Mexico, biking through the United States, and finishing their trip by crossing the border into Canada on Monday.
The Town of St. Stephen held a celebratory gathering in the David Allison Ganong Chocolate Park.
3CR Executive Director Bob Hood says along with his own personal stories, many of the guest riders who joined them during the trip had lost their wives to breast cancer.
“It really was heart-wrenching, a lot of the stories we heard. People who lost their wives or sisters to breast cancer. One in every eight women will be affected by breast cancer. There’s over 300,000 that will be diagnosed every year, and 40,000 die just in the United States. So that’s a lot of people.”
He says one of the highlights of the trip was meeting so many strangers.
“You know, you get slighted with all the bad stuff that happens out there, but everyone was just so incredibly helpful and nice. It really changed my perspective on what to expect out of everyday people.”
The group raised around $18,000 out of their $40,000 goal for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Hood thanked everyone who had donated to their cause during their trek, saying they were part of the solution to finding a cure,
He then directed his message to the 300 researchers who, around the world, are working on a cure for breast cancer.
“To the researchers out there, we’ve done what we can to try and raise some money. Now, we’re handing it over to you to help us find this cure, so that in the future a breast cancer diagnosis is just a blip in the day, not a life threatening condition.”
