Encorp Atlantic has announced that all single-use plastic bags brought to redemption centres across the province will now be recycled.
The new policy, which officially comes into effect this week to celebrate National Environment Week, will facilitate the recycling of single-use plastic bags of all sorts.
Encorp Atlantic Director Pierre Landry says they had been searching for years for ways to reduce the environmental footprint of New Brunswick’s Beverage Containers Program
He says it is a natural fit for the organization to start collecting the discarded plastic bags used by redemption centre customers as well.
The collected plastic bags will be sent to Enviroplast in Quebec, a business specializing in transforming plastic bags into plastic pellets.
“Essentially they wash the plastic, then melt the plastic, and turn it into pellets that will be sold to manufacturers to be made into more plastic bags or other plastic products” says Landry.
