A couple of tourists stopping in St. George this week for some shopping before visiting the famed falls got a rough reception when one woman had to feed her hungry child and a local man happened to see it.
The woman sat down and began to breastfeed her baby and Sandy Shaw witnessed what she called an unfortunate event.
“Her baby was fussy and it was his feeding time and she going to feed him and he didn’t think she should be exposing herself in public and he said there were rules for that and that she was not allowed to do that, stated Shaw.
The man eventually moved away but was still standing close by and Shaw decided to step in and help as the woman was on the verge of tears.
Shaw said, “I asked her if she wanted to go sit in my truck where it was quiet and safe and she could finish nursing her baby until her grandmother come by to pick her up, and she did.”
Shaw says despite this incident she wants any tourist to know that St. George is a very friendly place where people are kind and compassionate.
Crystal Cook, the mayor of St. George, said the town has been a breastfeeding-your-baby-friendly community for the past three years.
Cook said perhaps they need to do another education campaign to remind some residents of this.
