It seems the end is finally in sight after a long week of flooding in the city.
Saint John EMO and City of Saint John crews will begin to transition their efforts from flood response to flood recovery, as water levels begin to recede.
Saint John Police and Saint John Fire crews will be collecting recovery information from flood-impacted residents during wellness checks this week.
This information will help to identify what assistance and resources are needed, including volunteer efforts. This will include the removal of wet or damaged household items, yard debris and sandbags.
Residents who require assistance at their home may call 658-2844, email floodvolunteers@saintjohn.ca or complete an online form to identify the type of help they require and when it is needed. Volunteers are asked to do the same to identify their availability.
The city says it’s critical for those who have flooding in their homes to dry out wet materials as quickly as possible once the waters recede and it is safe to do so, otherwise they risk mould and mildew problems.
Sandbag distribution centres are now closed, but residents can call the city should they still need any–at 658-4455.
A special garbage collection will be organized after floodwaters recede for those in isolated areas.
An evacuation notice remains in effect for around 600 residents, who are at risk of flooding and isolation due to water on roads.
Several roads still remain closed, including a portion of the Trans Canada Highway. EMO is warning people to drive carefully, and to not ignore any road barricades in place.

Saturday’s rain event has slowed down the decrease of water levels in the Saint John River.
Saint John and Fredericton were both forecast to be below flood stage levels by Thursday.
Updated numbers have Fredericton getting there by Friday, and Saint John hovering just above flood levels by the end of the week.
Maugerville will also be below flood level by Friday.
Jemseg, Sheffield and Grand Lake will remain above flood levels, but will slowly decrease throughout the week.
