While a large portion of the province is dealing with major flooding, residents in Charlotte County can consider themselves lucky… at least for now.
Emergency Measures Organization Coordinator for St. George, Jason Gaudet says it was a blessing for Charlotte County to only receive a small amount of rain in the past week, even though local forecasts estimated between 10 and 15 mms of rain each day.
Lake Utopia is currently at capacity, hovering at the flood stage at 63.1 feet, but Gaudet says the water levels are starting to go down.
He tells us the lake has crested its banks in a few areas, but only in known flood-prone areas, and all flood gates are open.
Gaudet says the Magaguadavic River crested on Sunday, April 21, and they have been actively monitoring the situation since the weekend.
The Magaguadavic is currently between 57.6 and 57.8 feet.
Gaudet tells us Charlotte County is typically 24 to 48 hours behind any wave from the northern part of the province impacting the waters in the area.
The local coordinator says as long as the weather cooperates, the St. George area should be ok for flooding this year, but its always good to be prepared.
He still recommends to those residents in flood-prone areas to secure their belongings or move them to higher ground, such as lawn furniture, picnic tables, and docks.
