Only days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to St. Stephen, the leader of the Federal Conservative Party also landed in Charlotte County.
Andrew Scheer spoke to a few hundred people gathered at Uncle Mayn’s convenience store in St. George on Monday, April 1st.
He was joined by Premier Blaine Higgs, Conservative candidate John Williamson, and MLA for Fundy-The Isles-Saint John West Andrea Anderson-Mason.
Scheer promised the crowd if he wins the next federal election, his first act as Prime Minister would be to scrap the Trudeau government’s Carbon Tax.
“The hard-working Canadians I talk to everywhere in this country don’t want to pay his new tax. The Canadians I talk to want relief. They’re trying to make it to the end of the month before running out of money in the bank. They’re trying to provide for their families.”
He said the Conservatives will also find other ways to make like more affordable for Canadians.
Scheer says the federal portion of the GST and HST are not charged on what is deemed to be essential, such as groceries and pharmaceuticals.
“Heating your home in Canada is not a luxury, it’s a necessity, and that’s why a Conservative government, after the October election, will remove the GST from home heating and home energy costs.”
Scheer was asked how he plans on reducing the carbon footprint in Canada, he said they will be revealing their environmental plan with plenty of time before the next federal election.
“It will be a comprehensive plan that speaks to Canada’s responsibility to lower greenhouse gas emissions. It will also talk about how Canada can take advantage of what we do well here.”
He says it makes no sense for policy-makers here driving out jobs and investment to other countries where they don’t have the same environmental standards as Canada does, or the same access to clean power.
“In other words, often, we could see a case where global emissions are increased as production moves to countries like China and India where they rely on outdated technology and they don’t have the same standards. Our plan will speak to all those things.”
Scheer also mentioned the exemption for large industrial polluters as the “bogus line the Liberals are trying to tell Canadians”.
“They’re putting a price on pollution, but they’re not. They’re giving this massive exemption to the country’s largest polluters while hard-working individuals and families have to pay the full brunt of the tax.”
