A fallen New Brunswick RCMP officer will be honoured by having his name added to the national Cenotaph in Regina this fall.
Constable Leo Tyler Francis died on July 5, 1996, from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident while he was representing the RCMP at a Pioneer Days event in Oromocto, N.B.
Francis, a Wolastoqewi man from the Neqotkuk nation in North-western New Brunswick, joined the RCMP in 1987.
During his career, Francis earned two prestigious medals: the Commissioner’s Commendation for bravery, courage, presence of mind and professionalism, when he saved three children from a runaway boat, and the second received for contributions he made to improving community relations.
The Cenotaph serves to honour RCMP who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1876.
