The holiday season brings with it plenty of potential fire hazards, and the office of the Fire Marshal has some tips for you to make sure your Christmas spirit doesn’t go up in flames.
If you’ve gone with a real Christmas tree, then make sure you have one with green needles that don’t fall off when you touch them, and, get rid of it within 10 to 14 days. If it’s a fake, make sure it’s fire-resistant.
Whether it’s real or fake, your Christmas tree shouldn’t be near any heat source including a fireplace, a television or even a sunny window. You should also make sure your tree doesn’t block any exits or paths out of your home.
For any holiday lights you have, make sure they’re certified by the Canadian Standards Association, and don’t use indoor lights outdoors because they don’t have the weatherproof connections. As well, make sure you turn off the lights on your tree before you go to bed.
