The provincial government is taking steps to prevent municipal sewage treatment plants from being used for fracking wastewater.
Environment Minister Serge Rousselle announced legislative amendments to the Clean Environment Act which would close the current loophole.
He adds using municipal systems is an unacceptable risk that is no longer standard practice.
Industry is now being required to treat this wastewater themselves instead of using public infrastructure.
Executive Director of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick Lois Corbett applauded the move.
She added too often oil and gas industries make coastal and fresh water undrinkable by using sewage plants as dumping sites.
