In the Major League playoffs, San Francisco avoided elimination when second baseman Joe Panik hit a walk off double in the bottom of the 13th inning to score Brandon Crawford for a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. The game went into extra innings after Kris Bryant hit a two run homer for the Cubs in the 9th to tie the game. Earlier, Chicago got a three run homer by pitcher Jake Arrieta.
The Boston Red Sox were eliminated in three straight games after losing to Cleveland 4-3 as David Ortiz plays his final game. Cleveland will now play Toronto for the American League championship with the opening game Friday night in Cleveland.
Washington leads the Los Angeles Dodgers two games to one after an 8-3 win. Jayson Werth hit his 15th post season homer to tie Babe Ruth.
In the NFL, Tampa Bay got by Carolina 17-14 on a last second field goal. The Panthers are without quarterback Cam Newton who’s out with a concussion.
New Brunswick won the under 15 boys division in the Atlantic Challenge Cup hockey tournament, downing Nova Scotia 4-1 in the gold medal game.
Sidney Crosby has been diagnosed with another concussion. The Penguins open their season Thursday against Washington and Crosby’s status is now in doubt.
